ONE LIFE. MANY ROADS.
Introducing Open Road

An ordinary beginning.
An unlikely story.

You never quite know where life will take you. That’s rather the point.

A boy growing up in the Buckinghamshire countryside. A career that began at the Foreign Office in 1972. A working life shaped by diplomacy, communications, and the Middle East.

Open Road is Steve Martin’s personal account of the people, places, and unexpected turns along the way.

The man behind the memoir

A curious mind.
A life well travelled.

Steve Martin
AUTHOR. MEMOIRIST. STORYTELLER.

From the English countryside
to a much wider world.

Born in Aylesbury and raised in Great Hampden, Steve joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1972. His career took him into diplomacy and public affairs, with much of his working life spent in the Middle East.

After joining HSBC in Dubai as Head of Public Affairs in 1998, he continued working in communications until retiring in 2020. Writing his memoir opened another door: helping other people tell the stories of their own lives.
